Legacy Center Church partners with Faith, Community leaders for ‘Unity Prayer Walk’ and ‘Washing of the Feet’ Ceremony

Cary, NC June 8, 2020Visionary Pastors, Soboma Wokoma and Dr. Faith Wokoma, Founders of Legacy Center Church, led a Unity Prayer Walk from Cary City Center to the Cary Police Station, on Saturday, June 6. The walk included partnership and participation from Pastors and congregants at Catch the Fire Church and King’s Park International, both located in Durham, along with the Apex, Cary and Morrisville Chiefs of Police, and other community members. The Unity Prayer Walk included designated stops for prayer on policy changes, education, peace and racial reconciliation throughout our nation.

An unforgettable and spiritually significant part of the walk was the foot washing ceremony. Shara and Danny Chalmers of Kings Park International along with their Pastors, Murray Smith and Ash Murry, washed the feet of the Wokomas, pastors of African heritage. Called ‘Identification of Repentance’ the foot washing was a symbolic demonstration of forgiveness, solidarity and justice for all mankind.

The pastors of European descent repented on behalf of America, seeking forgiveness for slavery, racial injustices and discrimination that people of color have experienced.

From a Biblical perspective, it is an act of hospitality, showing humility of heart. In John 13, Jesus washed the feet of his disciples as a symbolic foreshadow of his atonement for their sins, but also to show them what true service looks like. After Jesus washed their feet, He commanded them to do as he had done.

“I felt the weight of the history of suffering, but as the other Pastors prayed, I began to feel hope for the future,” said Pastor Faith Wokoma. “For me, the foot washing has such spiritual significance because it was a symbolic gesture or way forward. I wept and prayed for all men’s hearts to soften towards one another – black, white, all races – and for justice to come. It was a way forward.”

The Police officers and demonstrators who joined the walk knelt before the Pastors as an act of humility and solidarity.

We should never fail to see the power of change that can come from positive community connections like this or we risk losing the very foundations of what communities stand for.”- Chief Toni Dezomits
